ESD and Antistatic Safety Shoes
FIRST OF ALL : ESD / ANTISTATIC SAFETY SHOES vs. EH SAFETY SHOES
EH rated safety shoes protect yourself from an electric shock, the idea behind these boots is pretty simple. The entire surface of the boot is made from non-conductive materials and as a result there’s no way that an electric charge reaches your feet. These boots are worn when working with live wires for example.
While EH rated shoes will isolate you from the ground completely, ESD safety shoes or antistatic safety shoes also provide some levels of isolation, but their main purpose is to protect against static electricity. They do this by CONDUCTING the static electricity out of the safety shoes to the ground, preventing a static shock, charge or spark. They are generally worn in industries in which a static shock is problematic but not life threatening.
SECOND OF ALL: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTISTATIC AND ESD
ESD and antistatic bring a lot of confusion as well, and not just when it comes to safety shoes. While one includes the other, it's incorrect to say the same in reverse. Although both terms refer to contact resistance, there are fundamental differences between the two.
Antistatic safety shoes have an electrical resistance between 0.1 and 1000 MegaOhm (MΩ). A value that fluctuates between good protection from electrical shocks and sufficient dissipative capacity. In other words this means, an antistatic safety shoe protects and build up static electricity until 1000 MΩ before conducting it to the ground.
ESD (or ElectroStatic Discharge) safety shoes on the other hand, have an electrical resistance between 0.1 and 100 (MΩ). Thus, they guarantee a low electrical resistance in order to prevent the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact. So, ESD safety shoes protect and build up static electricity until 100 MΩ before sending it to the ground, resulting in a very safe and controlled conduction to the ground.

ESD IN INDUSTRIES
ESD and antistatic safety shoes are used in different type of industries, such as aerospace, industrial equipment manufacturing, semiconductor manufacturing, electrical engineers, telecommunications equipment manufacturing, battery manufacturing, computer equipment manufacturing, medical industry, hospitals and many more.
ESD can cause a range of harmful effects on worksites. Gas, fuel vapour and coal dust explosions, as well as failure of solid state electronics components such as integrated circuits. Therefore it’s crucial that people who work in these environments stay protected at all times by wearing ESD safety shoes.
